The second leg of my Texas Hill Country trip had me heading north from the Guadalupe River up to Inks Lake State Park. I was all on my own for this one. Colors are just starting to turn on many of the trees so I was just a little early for peak season. I love this time of year! This is a large park and has over 200 spaces for RVs and tent camping as well as a few cabins. There are miles of trails and lots to see and do here and at nearby attractions.

Notes:
I slept with the windows open Sunday night, but it got colder on Monday and big line of storms came up early with very heavy winds and some rain. It cleared out by noon. So nice and quiet without the AC running (or furnace). The Inks Dam National Fish Hatchery is just down the road from the Park entrance. I went when I was a kid, but didn’t have time on this trip.

๐๐๐ Highlights of this trip๐๐๐
๐ฉ๐ป๐จ๐ปWho I went with: Just Me & Miss Priss
✅ What I did: Rode around the park, walked trails, went to Longhorn Cavern State Park just 6 miles down the road. That is a must-stop as well. Lots of CCC structures here.
๐ถ๐ป♀️Trails I walked: Devil’s Waterhole, Valley Spring Creek, Devil’s Backbone, Nature - 4 miles at Inks Lake. Just under a mile on easy trails at Longhorn Caverns after the tour. It was still very windy and I wanted to get back to the trails at Inks Lake. Click the links to see my route and more photos.
๐ What I saw: Some Fall leaves, lots of stars
๐ฆ Wildlife I encountered: Squirrels, Coots, Cardinals, Chickadees, Various ducks, Doves, Wrens, Pelicans, Herons. “Chicken Nugget” Tri-Color Bats in the Caverns.
๐ What I learned:
Park entrance has moved to the new headquarters. Fishing pier has green lights on it at night.. LHCSP has a very nice gift shop and Hunts Brothers pizza. The caverns were formed by an underground river. It is one of only a couple formed in this way in the USA.
You can’t get a discount on the tour with your Parks Pass, but you can on items in the store. The park rents out kayaks, canoes and paddleboats at the store (not the headquarters).
๐คฃ A laughable moment: Jokes by Caverns tour guide. She made the tour fun.
๐ฎ A surprising moment: Storm that came up Monday morning. I could get very close to the bats. I could almost reach out and touch them (but I didn’t). Inks Lake has FOUR side-by-side dump stations on the way out. In summer, they are VERY busy, so plan accordingly.
๐️ My favorite souvenir: Photos, stamp in my log books, medallion for my hiking stick.
Do you have a Texas State Parks Passport?
๐ฝ️Where I ate: Pizza from LHCSP
๐ Where I shopped: The stores at Inks Lake and Longhorn Caverns - started my Christmas shopping ๐
๐ Stops along the way: As you may have guessed…Longhorn Caverns State Park
๐ขWhere I danced: Not on this trip
